Starbucks Stock Analysis: Restructuring and Retail Headwinds
The coffee giant Starbucks (Nasdaq: SBUX) is undergoing a period of dramatic strategic change, underlined by CEO Brian Niccol’s announcement of a $1 billion restructuring plan. This plan includes the closure of roughly 400 underperforming North American stores and the elimination of 900 non-retail partner roles. While these actions are designed to refocus resources and create a "better, stronger, and more resilient Starbucks," the stock remains trapped in a tight trading range, reflecting investor uncertainty about the timeline for a successful turnaround.

The Fundamental Challenge
The company delivered Q3 fiscal 2025 results on July 29, 2025 that showed modest revenue growth but continued pressure on profitability. The primary factors squeezing the company are competitive pressure, price sensitivity, and macroeconomic uncertainty.
Consolidated Net Revenues rose 4% year-over-year to $9.5 billion, though global comparable store sales fell 2% as weaker transactions, partially offset by a 1% increase in average ticket. In North America, comparable store sales declined 2%, with U.S. traffic down 4%. International sales were flat overall, with China a bright spot, posting a 2% gain in comparable sales. Operating margins contracted sharply, down 680 basis points, reflecting higher labor costs, inflation, and investments tied to its “Back to Starbucks” turnaround strategy. Earnings per share plunged 47% from the prior year, pressured by restructuring and tax-related impacts.
The “Back to Starbucks” Strategy
Since taking the helm in September 2024, CEO Brian Niccol—known for revitalizing Chipotle and Taco Bell—has centered his strategy on restoring Starbucks as the "third place" between home and work. Niccol claims the early results of these uplifts are positive, showing customers visiting more often, staying longer, and sharing positive feedback.
Key initiatives under the "Back to Starbucks" plan include:
-
Store Uplifts: Renovating more than 1,000 locations over the next year with a focus on seating, power outlets, and a warmer design.
-
Operational Changes: Enhancing the in-store experience with the return of the condiment bar, writing on cups, more ceramic mugs and a revised code of conduct.
-
Labor Investment: Investing in "green apron partner hours" to ensure better staffing during busy times.
Technical Outlook
While the strategic moves offer long-term optimism, the mixed financial results and ongoing restructuring suggest a volatile period ahead for the stock price. Technically, SBUX is struggling to find a clear direction. Currently the stock faces immediate resistance at the $92 level. A successful break and close above $92 would set up a push toward the next major resistance at $99. Should the stock manage to stand above $99 for a period, the next target would be $110.
If the stock fails to push through these resistance levels, it will likely pull back to seek foundational support. The immediate support level to watch is $73. A definitive break below $73 could accelerate selling pressure, driving the stock to test the deeper support zone between $70 and $65.
