(NYSE:NKE) reported its fiscal 2026 first-quarter results on September 30, 2025, revealing a mixed financial performance that underscores the company’s ongoing "Win Now" transformation strategy amid a "dynamic operating environment." Q1 2026 Financial Highlights

NIKE reported first-quarter revenues of $11.7 billion, a modest 1 percent increase on a reported basis. This top-line growth was largely attributed to a strong resurgence in the Wholesale channel, which grew by 7 percent on a reported basis to $6.8 billion. CEO Elliott Hill specifically noted progress in the priority areas of North America, Wholesale, and Running, suggesting the "Win Now" strategy is yielding results in re-engaging key retail partners.

However, these gains were offset by significant weakness in NIKE Direct and Converse brand. NIKE Direct revenues fell 4 percent to $4.5 billion. This was primarily driven by a 12 percent decrease in NIKE Brand Digital sales, indicating continued challenges in the direct-to-consumer strategy, particularly online. The struggling Converse brand, with revenues down 27 percent to $366 million.

Profitability is the most worrying kind of measure. Gross margin decreased significantly by 320 basis points to 42.2 percent. Management explained such dramatic contraction mainly due to reduced average selling price (reflecting higher discounts and channel mix) and increased tariffs in North America. This pressure continued to trickle down and Diluted Earnings Per Share (EPS) fell by 30 percent to $0.49. The management admitted that more work should be done, and CFO Matthew Friend said that "progress will not be linear as dimensions of our business recover on different timelines."

Balance Sheet and Shareholder Returns

On the balance sheet side, inventories decreased 2% to $8.1 billion, while cash and equivalents dropped to $8.6 billion. NIKE continued shareholder returns with $714 million in dividends and buybacks in the quarter, highlighting its 23 consecutive years of dividend growth.
